Most of the shoots have now reached the top wire.

Only a few single flowers have opened on Negro and Rondo.

No red wine this year.

Hasansky started flowering on 17 July.

It has a chance to ripen.

Here is something unusual that can happen when it is cool while the flowers develop.

It is called starflower.

Almost every flower then splits like a star at the tip, instead of the cap coming off first.

These do not become grapes.

Varieties with a lot of Amurensis genes seem especially prone to this.

This slow worm likes the warmth on the slate and the black plastic.

There is sun in the daytime, but a cold wind from the north.

Last week of July

The last week of July turned warm, with temperatures between 22 and 30 degrees.

Shoot growth then got going properly.

14 June.

What poor growth!

Here is Rondo.

June, like May, is unbelievably cool.

When will flowering happen this year?

First week of June

In the first week of June the shoots are still small.

May, like April, was very cool, and growth does not get going well.

It is a joy to see that one of my own crosses already carries strong clusters in its second fruiting year.

Last year there were only 16 grapes in one cluster. It reached 85 Oe on 29 September,

after the thrushes had got under the net.

April

April has been quite cool this year.

Here, from the first week of May.

Now we can pick off the secondary and tertiary buds,

so that all the strength goes to the primary buds.

This has to wait until all danger of night frost is over.

January

In the low January sun the vines are pruned.

This year I am testing some of the varieties with short spur pruning (2 buds).
